Holistic Living and Education

Holistic Health Education

I am writing a health education curriculum for high schoolers.  It will be a 1/2 credit that will fullfil state requirements for all homeschooled high schoolers.  Although it is geared for earning credit, anyone could buy this curriculum as a great overview of holistic health.  Many of the pieces can be purchased seperately, but it is a better deal to purchase the curriculum as a whole.

Recipes

I love to save money and I love to use all natural products because they are much healthier.  Sometimes those two don’t go together though, but often times there are ways to use a healthier option that is cheaper.  So many of the ingredients in convenience foods or personal products are absolutely toxic to our bodies.  The sad thing is the USDA knows this, but they care more about selling rather than about our health.  It’s time we get back to simple ingredients and taking a little extra time to make products that your family uses most.  I pick and choose what I make, but here are a few that have made my list!  I hope you find some recipes you love and can take advantage of all of my hours spent in trial and error.  I’d love to hear your comments and suggestions as well!

Cleaning

Laundry Stain Spray

  • 6oz. filtered water
  • 2 tbsp vegetable glycerin
  • 2 tbsp castile soap
  • 10 drops YL lemon essential oil

Store in an 8oz spray bottle.  Shake before using.

Laundry Detergent

  • 4 cups water
  • 1/2 cup Sal Suds
  • 2/3 cup Washing Soda
  • 2 caps Thieves Household Cleaner by YL, optional

Heat water and dissolve washing soda.  Cool and add Sal Suds and THHC.  Safe on HE washers.  Use about 1/8 cup per load.

Laundry Bleach Alternative

  • 3 cups water
  • 1/2 cup hydrogen peroxide
  • 2 caps Thieves Cleaner
  • 10 drops lemon oil

Shake before using.  Pour about 1/8 cup into the bleach drawer.

DIY Cooking

Taco Seasoning

  • 2 tbsp chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsponion powder
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 2 1/2 tsp ground cumin
  • 2 tsp salt and pepper

Mix together and store in an airtight container.  Either refill a jar or buy an empty one and add a label!  Makes approx. 4 Tbsp.  4-7 tbsp = 1 packet

Italian Seasoning

  • 2 tbsp basil
  • 2 tbsp oregano
  • 2 tbsp rosemary
  • 2 tbsp thyme
  • 2 tbsp dried marjoram
  • 1 tbsp ground sage
  • 1 tbsp red pepper flakes, optional

Mix together and store in an airtight container.  You can pulse them in a small food processor until they are of even size, but not really necessary.

Hot Cocoa Mix

  • 2-3 cups sugar, regular or powdered
  • 1 cup baking cocoa
  • 1 tsp. salt

This recipe does not contain powdered milk so it will not go bad.  However, that means it is to be added to milk, not water.  Adjust amounts to your preference.

Mix together and store in an airtight container.  Add 2-3 tsp mix to 1 cup hot milk or your choice

Evaporated Milk

  • 1 cup water
  • 2/3 cup powdered milk

Mix together with a whisk or blender.

Sweetened Condensed Milk

  • 1/2 cup hot water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup powdered milk
  • 3 Tbsp melted butter

Mix together in a blender until the sugar dissolves.  Makes 1 1/2 cups.  Store in the fridge.  It will thicken as it cools.

Hershey’s Syrup

  • 3/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 1/4 cup water
  • 1 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • a dash of salt

Use a 2-3 quart saucepan.  Combine all but vanilla in pot over medium heat.  Whisk until smooth.  Stir contantly until it boils.  Allow to boil for 1-2 minutes.  Remove from heat, & add vanilla.  It will thicken after it cools.  Store in the fridge since it doesn’t have preservatives.  Should last about a month, if you don’t eat it before then!

Essential Oils

Why Young Living?

I researched many oil companies and decided on Young Living.  YL started with a passion to change the health of families around the world and with the largest selection of oils and supplements they are succeeding.  I feel that YL has the highest level of integrity during the production of their oils because of their high standards through every process of the planting (hand weeded-no pesticide farming) to the distillation process (1st distillation-not 2nd, 3rd, or complete).  They require sanitary state-of-the-art distilleries and have rigorous in-house and 3rd party testing beyond what is required.  I’ve been to one and seen for myself, as anyone is allowed to visit any of their fields and distillaries all over the world!  If a batch doesn’t meet a certain standard it is sold to another company.  If a crop fails or the weather affects production, then that oil goes out of stock!  No diluting and no added synthetics to make enough to meet the demand.
